Modern systems are run by low‑voltage control boards, and those are the cheapest thing in the cabinet for a surge to damage. The compressor usually survives what the board does not — which is why a system that seems completely dead after a storm is often a comparatively small repair.

The power came back but the air conditioning did not.+
Start with the breakers and the outdoor disconnect, because an outage frequently trips one and nothing else is wrong. If those are fine, the next most likely thing is a control board rather than the compressor — boards are the cheapest component in the system to damage and the easiest to mistake for a total failure.
Everything worked through the storm and quit two days later.+
That is common enough that we look for it. A surge can weaken a capacitor or a contactor without finishing it, and the part then fails under load a day or a week later. It looks like coincidence and it is usually cause and effect.
Is a lightning strike going to destroy the whole system?+
Rarely, and that is worth knowing before somebody quotes you one. A direct strike is genuinely destructive and it is also uncommon. Far more often what reaches your equipment is a surge down the line, and what it finds is the low‑voltage electronics. We will show you what is actually dead.
Is surge protection for HVAC worth it?+
In this part of the state it is a reasonable thing to ask about, and it is a category rather than a magic box — protection at the panel and protection at the equipment do different jobs. It will not stop a direct strike. It does deal with the everyday surges that quietly shorten the life of a control board.
The insurance adjuster wants to know what failed.+
Then you want somebody who will write down what actually failed and why, with the readings, rather than a line that says the system is bad. We will document what we found in plain terms. What we will not do is describe damage we did not measure.
The system is old and the storm finished it. Replace or repair?+
That depends on what the storm actually did, which is why we look before answering. If a surge killed a board on a twenty‑year‑old system, you are choosing between a modest repair on old equipment and a replacement you were probably heading toward anyway. Both are legitimate. You should get the numbers for each.
Should I turn the system off when a storm is coming?+
Switching it off at the thermostat does very little. Killing power at the breaker does more, and it is a reasonable thing to do if a severe storm is genuinely overhead. What we would not recommend is doing it every time the sky darkens in July, because the humidity that builds while it is off has its own cost.

The house smells musty after a few days without power.+
It will. Nothing has been removing water from the air, and in a Florida summer that adds up quickly. Running the system normally again fixes most of it; where it does not, the filter and the indoor coil are the places to look rather than assuming the worst about the walls.

Will you tell me if I do not need the work?+
Yes, and after a storm that matters more than usual, because it is exactly when people get told the system is finished. A tripped breaker and a dead board are both very different from a dead system, and you will be told which one you have.
Anything worth checking before I call?+
Three things that cost nothing. Check the breaker for the air handler and for the outdoor unit, and check the disconnect box outside — after an outage that is the answer more often than anything else. Look at the filter. And note whether the outdoor fan is turning at all; that one detail narrows it a long way.
