We are miles from the beach. Salt cannot be a problem here, can it?+
It is less of one than on the oceanfront and it is not zero. Salt carries inland on the wind and settles on the outdoor coil, and this side of the waterway still gets enough of it to matter over a decade. The giveaway is a system that has quietly started running longer for the same result.

Anything worth checking before I call?+
Three things that cost nothing. Check the breaker for the air handler and the outdoor unit. Look at the filter, because a collapsed one starves the system and imitates a much bigger fault. And look at the outdoor coil in daylight — powdery or flaking fin surface is worth mentioning on the phone.
