Arlington is on the route most weeks and the houses repeat — the same slab, the same shallow attic, the same room that was added on later. Most visits start from a shorter list than you would expect.

What the Post‑War Ranch Boom Left Behind
Arlington filled in quickly once the Mathews Bridge opened, which means a great deal of it is the same house, built the same way, in the same decade. That decade had its own ideas about ductwork.

These houses sit straight on concrete, and where the original duct was run inside that slab there is no practical way to repair it once it has failed. The answer is to abandon it and go overhead instead. Worth knowing before anybody quotes you a system that still has to breathe through it.
Block walls take heat all afternoon and hand it back through the evening, and in this era most went up with nothing on either face to slow that down. The system is less undersized than it is still working long after sundown.
A low‑pitch roof leaves a shallow attic, which is exactly where the duct and often the air handler had to go. Less room means tighter bends, harder access and runs that were compromised the day they were fitted. It is the first place we look when one end of the house underperforms.
A good half of the ranches out here have gained a room since they were built — a carport closed in, a porch glazed over. Those spaces were rarely added to the original system properly, which is why they bake in August and chill in January while the rest of the house is perfectly comfortable.
Arlington Service Area
From the Mathews Bridge to Fort Caroline
Arlington is wide, flat and largely built in one stretch, which makes it one of the more predictable runs we do. This is where the truck actually ends up.
The eastern end, out toward the memorial and the river. Longer lots and a fair number of houses that have been added to twice.
The commercial heart of it, off Atlantic Boulevard. Plenty of residential behind it and a good deal of shop and office work in front.
The older riverside streets, where the houses are larger and the duct runs longer than the Arlington average.
Around Jacksonville University. A mix of original owners and rentals, which usually means a mix of equipment ages on one street.
The north‑south spine. Most of what we run out here turns off it at some point.
The commercial corridor through the middle — restaurants, shops and offices we cover on the commercial side.

Let’s Figure This Out Together
No quote needed, no email, no phone number — just tell us what it’s doing and we’ll give you our honest read.
1How old is the system?
2What’s it doing? tick all that apply
3How often has it needed fixing?
Straight talk: If somebody tells you your system is “illegal now” because of the refrigerant rules — it isn’t. R‑410A systems can still be serviced. New equipment moved to R‑454B in 2025 and R‑410A production is stepping down, so topping off an older system gets pricier every year. That’s a reason to plan, not a reason to panic‑buy tonight.

The Dane Is Not Just a Logo
There is a reason the dog got top billing. Great Dane Heating & Air was put together by people who are hopeless about animals, and from the start the plan was that the company would be worth something to the pet population of Duval County as well as to its customers.
That means rescue events, hours spent with animals still waiting at the shelter, and a Rescue of the Week going out to everyone who follows us. It is also why we are a Paw Partner Corporate Sponsor of the Jacksonville Humane Society.

Cool Rooms in a Sixty‑Year‑Old House
A working air conditioner is comfort. In a block house on a slab, with the duct wherever the builder could fit it, getting every room there takes knowing the house type as well as the equipment.

Vetted people in your home
Florida state certified — licence CAC036942 — fully insured, and BBB accredited at an A+ rating. The same small crew every time, which counts for a lot in a house where the access is tight and most of the work is overhead.

What the ducts are carrying
Duct in a shallow attic collects what a shallow attic has in it, and Florida humidity does the rest. Filtration, purification and humidity control deal with the air itself rather than only its temperature.

Paul came out and replaced our blower motor and saved the day. He fielded my call on Sunday evening, then did the service Monday afternoon. Friendly, efficient, and professional.
After years of feeling vulnerable to dishonest HVAC companies, a neighbor put me in touch. He quickly earned my trust — quick to return calls, reasonable rates, and he’s never tried to sell me things I don’t need.
Beyond reproach. Prompt, professional, and had the problem diagnosed and repaired the same day. Integrity, honesty and great customer service.
We’ve used him for everything from small tweaks to replacing our entire unit. Quick, reliable, honest, and clean — and he beat the prices of every competitor. Yes, we priced out seven.
Fast and efficient, unbelievably affordable pricing. He quickly figures out the problem and explains it in a way anyone can understand. You automatically feel like you can trust him.
Our A/C went down and the team showed up Monday morning first thing. We had cool air flowing in no time. The crew was fast, clean, and finished under time.
They replaced our entire AC unit and did some duct work. Professional staff and excellent communication. Top quality service and work!
Mike and the team were very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The price was not unreasonable. So happy we found this company — we know we will be taken care of in the years to come.
Just had Great Dane install a new A/C in my home. Mike came to my home, saw what I had, and I told him what I wanted installed. There was absolutely no sales pressure.
Mike came out and gave an estimate with no fluff, which is what I like. He was honest and professional. The team that installed the unit worked well together and the work performed was stellar!

FAQ
Let’s Dig Into the Details
The questions Jacksonville asks us most — straight answers, no jargon.
Cold air comes out, but the house never quite gets there.
In a block house that often means the system is fine and the envelope is not. Concrete walls that absorbed heat all afternoon keep releasing it into the evening, so the equipment is still fighting at nine at night. We measure the temperature split across the coil first — that says within a few minutes whether the machine is underperforming or simply outnumbered.
One end of the house is always behind the rest.
With the duct in a shallow attic, the run to that end was fitted around the roofline rather than sized for the distance. Tight bends and crushed sections both cost airflow, and neither is visible from inside the house. Measuring at that register and again at the air handler tells you which one you have.
The ducts are in the slab. Can they be cleaned or repaired?
Cleaned sometimes; repaired almost never. Once a run cast into concrete has cracked or taken on water there is no access to it worth having, and the honest answer is usually to abandon it and run new duct overhead through the attic. That is a bigger job than a cleaning and a far smaller one than living with it.
Can a modern system even work with duct this old?
Not always at its rating. Equipment has become a great deal better at moving air efficiently, and the duct in these houses was sized for what was normal sixty years ago. A high‑efficiency system on an undersized run gives you the price of the new machine and the airflow of the old duct. We measure the duct before quoting the system.
Does it have to go back in the attic?
Not necessarily. Where attic access is genuinely poor, a ductless head serving the problem end of the house avoids the run altogether. It is not the right answer for every layout, but it has solved a lot of Arlington add‑on rooms without anybody dragging duct across a ceiling.
The carport was closed in years ago. Why does it never keep up?
Because it was almost certainly never added to the system properly. A converted carport or glazed porch is load the original equipment was never sized for, and it is usually fed by extending the nearest duct rather than given anything of its own. It is the single commonest complaint out here, and it has three or four honest fixes depending on the layout.
The air handler is in the attic and awkward to reach. Does that matter?
It matters for what gets done rather than for what goes wrong. Equipment that is difficult to reach tends to be looked at less often, and the things that get skipped — the drain, the coil, the filter — are exactly the things that cause failures. If yours is up there, a scheduled visit is worth more than it would be in a garage.
What is the $99 HVAC Refresh & Tune‑Up?
A full seasonal check‑over of the system you already have — measurements taken, the parts that genuinely foul cleaned, and a straight answer about what needs attention and what does not. In a house where the equipment lives in the attic, it is also the one time anybody looks at it properly. Cannot be combined with any other offer, one per household.
Would insulation help more than new equipment?
In this housing stock it frequently would. A block wall with nothing on the inside face, and an attic whose insulation has thinned or settled, both make the system run longer for the same result. We will tell you when that is where your money goes furthest, even though it is not a sale for us.
Do you cover Arlington, or is it extra?
It is inside the normal service area at the same pricing as anywhere else we go — Fort Caroline, Regency, Arlingwood, University Park and the streets off Monument Road included. Great Dane is licensed in Florida as CAC036942, which you are welcome to look up before you let anybody into the house.
Will you tell me if I do not need the work?
Yes. With houses this age the expectation is usually that everything must be due, and often it simply is not. If a part is drifting but has not failed, you get told that, with the reading behind it, and the decision stays yours.
Anything worth checking before I call?
Three things that cost nothing. Check the breaker for the air handler and for the outdoor unit. Look at the filter — a collapsed one starves the system and imitates a much larger fault. And look at the outdoor unit itself; these lots have had sixty years to grow a hedge somewhere awkward, and airflow around that cabinet matters.
Done Right the First Time
Honest, upfront pricing and work we stand behind 100% — that’s the Great Dane guarantee.
